Vitamin D plays a substantial role in the regulation of calcium and maintenance of phosphorus levels in the blood, two factors that are extremely important for maintaining healthy bones, teeth and muscles. It is vital for us all and particularly those with dementia to keep in good physical health and maintain good muscle strength as this can help prevent falls and frailty. If we are strong and mobile we can stay active for longer which in turn can help halt the speed of cognitive decline. Researchers at Nippon Medical School in Tokyo, Japan, found that women who had spent at least three hours outdoors every day saw an increase in the level of their white blood cells, which help fight viruses and diseases. Keeping illness at bay is particularly important to vulnerable people, keeping well for as long as possible is so critical. As well as physical health, the act of going outside can instantly reduce stress levels and help regulate sleep patterns. Getting outside also means we are interacting with others, being sociable can bring about a reduction in feelings of loneliness and isolation and can also be hugely helpful in preventing the speed of cognitive decline.
